The Ultimate Play Therapy Supply Lists

Whether you're hopping between schools, seeing clients in-home, or just want a grab-and-go option, a portable play therapy kit can make a huge difference in how you show up—prepared, playful, and ready for anything.

To help you build (or refresh) your mobile setup, I created a clickable, customizable Google Sheet packed with my go-to supply recommendations. Most of these are items I’ve personally used in real sessions, with real kids—and they’ve earned their spot in my kit.

This list is perfect for therapists who want to stay organized, intentional, and on budget.

Here’s what you’ll find inside:

Portable Play Therapy Kit List

A well-stocked, portable kit that travels beautifully.

This section includes:

  • A sturdy, easy-to-carry storage container (with wheels or a shoulder strap)

  • Classic and versatile toys for symbolic play

  • Items for connection, co-regulation, and emotional expression

Whether you’re in school-based, community mental health, or other office set-up that requires flexibility this list will help you hit the road with confidence.

Portable Sand Tray Therapy Kit List

Yes, you can (and should!) bring sand tray with you—and no, it doesn’t have to be a total mess.

Inside this section:

  • My favorite pre-assembled portable starter kit that I have used for years (this has traveled with me to conferences around the country, trainings, MANY sessions with real kiddos and to classroom demonstrations for the grad students I teach!)

  • The pre-assembled kit includes a carrying bag, sand tray, miniature storage container, sand, and a great starter collection of miniatures

  • A list of carefully selected miniatures meant to round out and complete the starter collection in the kit

  • Additional miniatures that would be great to have if your budget allows.

Priorities, Budgeting & Tracking — Already Built In

I didn’t just give you a shopping list—I gave you a system.

Inside the spreadsheet, every item is labeled as:

  • High Priority – Start here!

  • Medium Priority – Add as budget allows.

  • Low Priority – Optional but fun or helpful.

Plus, the sheet includes:

  • A built-in budget tracker so you can stay financially grounded

  • A purchase tracker so you can see what you’ve already bought and what’s still on the list

No more wondering what you still need, what’s most important, or how much you’ve spent. It’s all there, ready for you.
